Down 13 to six against the Panthers, two 18 left in the second quarter, first and goal at the Carolina one. A pass interference penalty on the snap before had moved the ball from the six. Jahmyr Gibbs went over left guard for the touchdown, and the kick tied it at 13. Plus point seven expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — on the snap that capped a 68-yard drive.
The line: 15 carries, 46 yards, one touchdown, five of the 15 successful, minus point three expected points on the carries; seven targets, four catches, 31 receiving yards, nine of them on St. Brown's lateral on fourth and 20. His best run was 13 yards off left tackle on second and 13 early in the second quarter. Two third-down targets, third and 10 in the first quarter caught for four, and third and seven at the Carolina 25, incomplete, upheld on Detroit's challenge.
He had every Detroit carry, but the game took them away: 11 before halftime for 35 yards, four after it for 11, while Goff threw 31 times after the break.
Back in June the preview's case for Gibbs was that the backfield was his to carry. It is: Sione Vaki, who had six carries last week, had none. Four games: 80 carries, 353 yards, five rushing touchdowns. The work is his; this week the game script decided how much of it there was.
