Jalen Hurts — Week 1: Three Touchdowns, Two to Goedert

Hurts completed fourteen of twenty-five throws for two hundred three yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, was sacked three times, and scrambled five times for forty-eight yards with no designed runs. His twenty-two-yard scramble on third and eighteen with eight oh three left was the largest win-probability swing any Eagle produced, and his forty-three-yard touchdown to Dallas Goedert later in the drive was the largest play by expected points, in a 24–22 win over the Commanders.

17 to 16, eight oh three left in the fourth quarter, third and 18 at the Philadelphia 31. Jalen Hurts scrambled up the middle for 22 yards to the Washington 47. The run was worth +2.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 15.6 points of win probability, the chance of winning after the play against before it, the largest gain any Eagles pass or run produced all afternoon. Later in the drive, third and six at the Washington 43 with six 12 left, he threw short middle to Dallas Goedert for a 43-yard touchdown: +5.0 expected points, the largest on any Eagles play, and 14.6 points of win probability, the second-largest.
The line: 14 completions on 25 throws, 203 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, three sacks for 21 yards, +1.3 expected points on 28 pass plays, and three of five deep throws complete. The first touchdown was third and 17 at the Washington 17, 14 17 left in the second quarter, down nothing to three, deep right to Goedert. The second was second and seven at the Washington nine, six 35 left in the half, up seven to three, short left to Dontayvion Wicks. Before halftime he was eight of 15 for a hundred 13; after it, six of 10 for 90. The running was five carries, all scrambles, no designed runs, 48 yards, two first downs, and +4.2 expected points — more than the pass plays produced — with two kneels that do not count. The last sack, third and 10 at the Philadelphia 44 with five 30 left in the third, was worth −2.0, the costliest of his pass plays.
Six throws went to DeVonta Smith, five to Goedert, four each to Wicks and Makai Lemon, two to Saquon Barkley, one to Will Shipley, and three carry no receiver. 16 pass plays before halftime and 12 after, 10 designed runs and eight. On third down Hurts had 11 pass plays — nine throws, four completions, three first downs, two sacks — and converted two more himself, third and five in the first quarter and the third and 18; Philadelphia converted six of 14, the sixth Barkley's 42-yarder on third and two.
Back in June the preview made no call on Hurts — QB7 at pick 67, the most defense-proof floor outside the top of the position, built on a 30-percent rushing share and eight rushing touchdowns, with A.J. Brown's departure capping the passing ceiling — and it said to watch the rushing and goal-line volume, and the passing without Brown. Sunday inverted the shape: no designed runs, no rushing touchdown, 48 yards on five scrambles, and three touchdowns through the air, two to a tight end. One game with no goal-line carries says nothing yet about that role, and one game with three passing scores says nothing yet about the ceiling. Philadelphia is at the Titans on Sunday the twentieth.
