27 to 10, Bills, 11 40 left in the third quarter, fourth and five at the Buffalo 40. Jared Goff threw short over the middle to Sam LaPorta for 18. +4.3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — the most valuable Detroit play of the night, and 3.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Four plays later Amon-Ra St. Brown caught a two-yard touchdown.
The line: 26 completions on 38 throws, 327 yards, four touchdowns, no interception, four sacks, +18.6 expected points on 42 pass plays. 337 air yards. Two scrambles for seven yards and an aborted snap he recovered himself. Before halftime it was 11 of 16 for a hundred 28; after it, 15 of 22 for a hundred 99. The touchdowns: 11 yards to Jahmyr Gibbs on second and four with five-oh-seven left in the half, down 21 to nothing; two to St. Brown on second and one in the third; one to LaPorta on first and goal with 10 57 left, which made it 34 to 24; and 27 down the middle to St. Brown with a minute 48 left, with the win probability model reading one-tenth of a percent. Three throws traveled 20 or more yards in the air and two came down — the TeSlaa 20 on fourth and 18 and the last touchdown.
The sacks were the other half. Greg Rousseau on third and eight in the first quarter, −7, which ended a drive; Rousseau again on second and one, a strip that Brock Wright recovered; Bradley Chubb on third and five before halftime, −13, which ended another; and Chubb and Michael Hoecht splitting one on second and 10 late. Detroit converted four of 11 third downs, and Goff's throws were three of the four; two of the seven misses were sacks. The ball went 13 times to St. Brown, eight to Gibbs, seven to LaPorta, five to Isaac TeSlaa, four to Jameson Williams, one to Sione Vaki. 19 pass plays before halftime and 23 after, against 10 eight designed runs.
Back in June the preview had Goff as a no-call: a QB15 price that fairly reflected a QB9-to-12 track record, with a rebuilt line and a new play-caller listed as the only real unknowns. Week 1 was one sack in 39 throws. Thursday was four in 42, three of them on third down or second and one, against a front that took the ball away zero times. Two weeks in, the line question has one clean week and one that was not, and the play-caller question has 42 pass plays to 20 runs on a night Detroit trailed from the first quarter, which is what the score asked for. Detroit is home to the Jets on Sunday the 20-seventh.
