Jared Goff took the Cardinals apart once the first quarter was over: 19 of 30, 271 yards, 3 touchdowns, no interceptions, 3 sacks. He was worth +16.4 expected points added (EPA) on 33 dropbacks, +0.50 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position.
The defining throw came tied 7-7 with 9:38 left in the second quarter. Fourth and 1 at the Arizona 38: Goff threw short right to Sam LaPorta, who went 38 yards for the touchdown, +5.6 EPA and +17.2 points of win probability, the biggest swing of the game. On Detroit's previous drive, down 7-0, he had converted fourth and 3 at the Arizona 47 with a 12-yarder to LaPorta that a 15-yard penalty extended, +4.5 EPA.
Fourth down kept paying. Up 14-7 with 4:55 left in the half, fourth and 4 at the Arizona 8, he hit Jameson Williams for a touchdown and 21-7. In the third he found Williams again for 39 yards on third and 10, then ran 1 yard up the middle on fourth and 1 for 38-14.
The start was rough: all three sacks came in the first quarter, and Detroit trailed 7-0 after one.
His +0.50 per dropback compared with +0.24 across Weeks 1 through 4 (+42.2 EPA on 174 dropbacks). His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was +0.3, after +1.5. Through Week 4: 109 of 161, 1,214 yards, 9 touchdowns and no interceptions.
