Jaylen Wright Camp Update — August 31: Miami Kept Both Backups

Cutdown came for Jaylen Wright's competition and took none of it. The roster Miami announced Sunday lists four backs — Ollie Gordon II, Wright, De'Von Achane and DJ Herman, per Grace O'Donnell on the team's official site — so the backup question this file has tracked all August was resolved by keeping everybody at the top. What the cutdown did clear out was everyone below: Jarquez Hunter, acquired from the Rams on Thursday for Tutu Atwell per Adam Schefter's reporting via Sports Illustrated, was waived three days later at Sunday's cutdown, per the team's transaction wire, with no reachable beat writer explaining the sequence. Carlos Washington Jr. was waived Sunday after carrying 13 times for 34 yards in the finale, per Grace O'Donnell, and three days after Hafley praised his camp, per Alain Poupart at Dolphins On SI. Donovan Edwards and Coleman Bennett went Saturday, per team announcements. Asked Saturday whether Miami would keep four running backs, Hafley said "those are still some of the discussions going on, and I think that will clear up between today and tomorrow," per the team's transcript — the direct coach quote on Wright's exact competition, one day before it resolved.

Last week's watch item asked whether Wright would get the first backup carries in Friday's finale and hold onto the ball. The honest answer: the coverage records no Wright carry at all. No snap for him appears in any of three reachable finale accounts — an omission, not a reported inactive — and the backfield work that is recorded went to Washington Jr. So the fumble from the Giants game stands as the last piece of game tape on his August; the finale did not overwrite it. On the other half of the question, no update on the apparent oblique injury Gordon left the Giants game with was reported anywhere reachable this window — his presence on the initial 53, with no injured-reserve or physically-unable-to-perform designation attached, is the only signal, and we do not infer health from a roster spot.
