Noel was thrown to twice and caught both, and both came with under a minute left in a half: thirty-five yards short middle to the Buffalo twelve with forty seconds left in the second quarter, the play before Nico Collins's touchdown, and eighteen yards on third and three to the Buffalo nine with thirty seconds left in the game, worth eighteen points of win probability. Houston was sacked twice from there in a 36–31 loss to the Bills.

Jaylin Noel's second catch of the season put Houston nine yards from winning. Third and three at the Buffalo 27, 30 seconds left, Texans down 31 to 36: C.J. Stroud short right to Noel, pushed out at the nine by C.J. Gardner-Johnson, 18 yards. That play was worth +1.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 18 points of win probability, the chance of winning from that spot, which went from about 37 percent to about 55. It was the high point of Houston's last drive. The next three snaps were a sack, an incompletion, and a sack with a fumble, and the game ended at the Buffalo 24.
The first catch was the same shape. Second and one at the Buffalo 47, 40 seconds left in the first half, no huddle, Houston down 14 to 24: short middle to Noel, 35 yards, pushed out at the 12 by Gardner-Johnson, +2.4 expected points. Nico Collins caught the 12-yard touchdown on the next play. Two targets, two catches, 53 yards, no touchdowns, +4.0 expected points on the targets, second among Houston pass-catchers to Collins's +4.9, on eight fewer throws. He also returned three kickoffs, for 23, 21 26 yards, and fair-caught a punt.
Two targets on 38 Houston throws is a small share. Collins had 10, Dalton Schultz eight, Xavier Hutchinson six, David Montgomery three, and Noel was level with Kayshon Boutte and Foster Moreau at two. The 53 yards were second among Houston receivers to Collins's 75, on eight fewer targets, and the 35-yarder was the longest Houston completion of the day. One target before halftime and one after, both with the clock under a minute.
Back in June the preview had Noel 90-first among wide receivers across 17 games, and said availability was never his issue — volume was. Sunday was that sentence again: two targets, and 53 yards on them. Two catches do not make a role, and both came in situations the play-by-play describes only as no-huddle and late. Houston is home to the Bengals on Sunday the twentieth. The volume is still the question, and 53 yards on two throws is a reason to keep asking it.
