Jeremiyah Love — Week 2: Nine Carries to Allgeier's Five

Love led Arizona's backs with 9 carries for 29 yards and caught all 3 of his targets for 16, a week after Tyler Allgeier out-carried him 17 to 11. Three straight carries of 8, 9 and 1 moved Arizona from the Seattle 27 to the 9 on its only scoring drive. Eight of his nine carries came before halftime, in a 31–7 loss to the Seahawks.

Seven to nothing, Seahawks, two 14 left in the first quarter, second and two at the Seattle 19. Jeremiyah Love went off right tackle for nine yards to the 10 and the first down. +0.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 1.9 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It was the middle of three straight carries, eight, nine and one, that moved Arizona from the Seattle 27 to the nine, on the drive that ended in Trey McBride's fourth-down touchdown, Arizona's only points. It was also Love's only first down of the day.
The line: nine carries, 29 yards, no touchdown, one first down, three of the nine successful, −2.5 expected points on the carries; three targets, three catches, 16 yards, +0.1. The carries went three, seven, −2, eight, nine, one, −3, three, three. Eight before halftime for 26 yards, one after for three. The one that hurt was second and one at the Seattle 44 with 13 minutes left in the second quarter, tied at seven: up the middle for −3, −1.4 expected points and −4.5 points of win probability, and Arizona punted two snaps later. The catches were seven, nine and nothing. His last touch came with six oh four left in the third quarter. None of his carries came on third or fourth down.
The split: Love nine designed runs, Tyler Allgeier five, Bam Knight two on the final possession. Arizona called 16 designed runs, 12 before halftime and four after, and ran five offensive plays in the fourth quarter. By touches it was Love 12, Allgeier seven.
Back in June the preview made no call on Love — the third overall pick, priced on a season that had not happened, under a head coach who said he wanted a rotation — and said to watch the split over the first two weeks. Week 1 went 17 carries to 11 for Allgeier, with the touchdown on Love's side. Sunday went nine to five for Love. Through two games that is Allgeier 22 carries for 71 yards and Love 20 for 70, which is a rotation, close to even, and nothing like a lead role for either. Sunday's sample was also small for a reason: Arizona trailed by 10 or more from the middle of the third quarter. Two games settle little. Arizona is at the 49ers on Sunday the 20-seventh.
