23 to 13, 49ers, 14 21 left in the fourth quarter, third and two at the San Francisco 20. Jeremiyah Love went up the middle for no gain. −1.3 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −5.9 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the largest loss on any Arizona pass or run that stood. Arizona went for it, drew a pass interference flag to the one, and after Jacoby Brissett was stopped on a sneak, Brissett threw short right to Love for one yard and the touchdown on second and one. The kick made it 23 to 20.
The line: 21 carries, 90 yards, no rushing touchdown, three first downs, 13 of the 21 successful, +1.8 expected points on the carries; five targets, five catches, 19 yards and the touchdown. The carries went seven, six, one, eight, five, five, eight, four, nothing, five, five, six, four, six, nothing, eight, two, two, nothing, five, three. Nothing longer than eight, and three stops for no gain. 10 carries before halftime for 49 yards, 11 after for 41. Three came on third down. The first was third and two at the San Francisco 41 on the opening drive, scoreless, five yards off right tackle and the first down, 6.3 points of win probability, the largest gain on any Arizona run of the day. The second was third and four at the 15 late in the third, eight yards around left end to the seven, on the drive that ended in Michael Wilson's touchdown. The third was the stop at the 20. Four carries started inside the San Francisco 20; none started inside the five, and both times Arizona had the ball at the one, Brissett sneaked. Two more runs, for three yards and one, came back on holding calls. The catches went three, three, four on third and 12, the touchdown, and eight on second and one in the final 90 seconds.
The split: 27 Arizona designed runs, 21 for Love, four for Brissett, two for Tyler Allgeier. 21 carries is the most of Love's career by 10.
Back in June the preview made no call on Love — the third overall pick, a projection on a season that had not happened, under a head coach who said he wanted a rotation — and said to watch the split. Week 1 went 17 carries to 11 for Allgeier; Week 2 nine to five for Love, and the Week 2 episode called the first two games a near-even rotation. Sunday was 21 to two, in a game Arizona trailed from the first quarter. That contradicts the rotation read in one afternoon. Three games: Love 41 carries for a hundred 60 yards, Allgeier 24 for 70. One game of lead-back work does not settle a role. Arizona is at the Giants on Sunday the fourth.
