Josh Jacobs did his best work as a receiver against the Lions in his first game of the season: 7 targets, 5 catches, 55 yards, a touchdown and +3.9 expected points added (EPA). EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. On the ground he ran 11 times for 36 yards and -1.7 EPA, and 4 of the 11 carries gained positive EPA.
The touchdown came down 10-7 early in the third, five plays after Green Bay recovered a fumbled snap at the Detroit 42. Third and 6 at the 25: Jordan Love threw short left and Jacobs ran the rest of the way, +3.6 EPA and 13.8 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win, for a 14-10 lead. Two more catches moved the chains on third down, 10 yards on third and 3 in the first quarter and 8 on third and 6 in the fourth, and his 10-yard run to the Detroit 26 came on the drive that tied it 17-17.
The goal line was harder. On the opening drive, from the Detroit 6, he gained 3 and then nothing at the 3, and Green Bay missed a 26-yard field goal. Tied 17-17 with 4:50 left, starting at the Detroit 22, he ran for no gain, caught a 5-yarder, and was the target of an incomplete deep throw on third and 5. The 35-yard field goal that followed was blocked.
