Geno Smith threw short left to Kenyon Sadiq, who got to the 22, 12 yards, 18 short. +0.2 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. The Jets punted, and Green Bay kicked the winning field goal on the possession that followed. It was Sadiq's longest gain of the day and the last pass New York threw.
The line: three targets, two catches, 17 yards, no touchdowns, no first downs, −0.5 expected points on the targets, no carries. The first catch was the Jets' second offensive snap, second and nine at their own six with 12 46 left in the first quarter, short right, caught behind the line by the air-yards figure, five yards to the 11. The incompletion was first and 10 at the New York 42 with five 29 left in the third, tied at seven, short right and defended by Evan Williams. Eight air yards on the three targets, 16 yards after the catch on the two receptions. One target before halftime, two after, overtime included.
Three targets were fifth on the team, behind Adonai Mitchell's 12, Garrett Wilson's seven, Isaiah Williams's six and Breece Hall's five, and ahead of two to Jeremy Ruckert. Jets tight ends were thrown to five times out of 36 Smith throws that had a receiver attached.
Back in June the preview's read was a sixteenth-overall pick out of Oregon, the fastest combine tight end in 14 years, coming off a June sports-hernia procedure the team called minor, with the house line that rookie tight ends make you wait. Week 1 was a three-yard touchdown run and three catches on three targets, and that episode said the number to watch was whether three targets becomes five. It stayed three, and the passing volume around it went from 24 throws to 41, so the share went down. Six targets, five catches and 38 yards through two games is the waiting the preview described. Two games do not settle a rookie's role. New York is at the Lions on Sunday the 20-seventh.
