Coleman was thrown to twice Sunday. The first was third and twelve at the Houston thirty-four in the first quarter, a one-yard catch he lateraled to Khalil Shakir for ten more; the second was the two-point conversion after Josh Palmer's go-ahead touchdown with 1:36 left, incomplete. One catch for eleven yards on a day DJ Moore was targeted eight times, in a 36–31 win over the Texans.

Keon Coleman's last target of the afternoon was the one that would have made it a seven-point game. Two-point conversion attempt from the Houston two, a minute 36 left, Buffalo up 36 to 31 after Josh Palmer's touchdown: Josh Allen to Coleman, incomplete. The failed try is credited at −0.9 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and about six points of win probability, which left Houston a touchdown from winning rather than a touchdown from a tie. Houston got to the Buffalo nine and no further.
The other target was in the first quarter. Third and 12 at the Houston 34, eight 14 left, scoreless: Allen short left to Coleman for one yard, then a lateral to Khalil Shakir, who was pushed out at the 23 for 10 more. The play is credited to Coleman as an 11-yard catch, one short of the first down, and it was worth +1.0 expected points. A too-many-men penalty on the fourth-and-one that followed turned it into fourth and six, and Tyler Bass kicked a 46-yarder for the game's first points. One target in each half; one catch, 11 yards, no touchdowns, and the two together came out at about zero expected points.
The passing game he was a small part of threw 29 times plus the two-point try. DJ Moore had eight targets, Dalton Kincaid and Shakir six each, James Cook four, Palmer two, Coleman one, Dawson Knox one, and one throw carried no intended receiver — plus the two-point try to Coleman. Moore and Kincaid had 230 of Allen's 334 yards and every completion of 35 or more. Among the wide receivers, Coleman's two targets were level with Palmer's, behind Moore's eight and Shakir's six.
Back in June the preview's read was that Coleman's volume had never reached the level that carries — 60-first among wide receivers across 12 games — and that DJ Moore's arrival put another receiver above him on the depth chart. Sunday was the read on paper: two targets, one of them a conversion try, in Moore's eight-target debut. It is one game and a lot of the first-half throws went elsewhere for reasons the play-by-play does not give. Buffalo is home to the Lions on Thursday the seventeenth.
