Six to three, Vikings, eight 30 left in the fourth quarter, fourth and one at the Minnesota eight. Kyle Monangai went behind right guard for two yards and the first down. +1.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 7.3 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. It was his third straight touch: a seven-yard catch from the 17 to the 10, two yards on third and three, then the conversion. On the next snap Caleb Williams was sacked and injured, and three snaps after that the field goal was blocked.

The line: 10 carries, 47 yards, three first downs, four of the 10 successful, +1.0 expected points on the carries. The carries went three, two, nothing, 15, four, 12, seven, nothing, two, two. Three before halftime for five yards, seven after for 42. The middle of that list is one stretch: on the opening drive of the third quarter he carried on three consecutive snaps from the Minnesota 42, 15 around right end, four, and 12 behind right guard to the 11. Four plays later D'Andre Swift fumbled at the one. An eight-yard run in the first quarter came back on a holding penalty. He caught both of his targets, four yards in the first quarter and the seven in the fourth, 11 yards, −0.7 expected points.

The split: Swift 16 designed runs, Monangai 10, Williams two. Monangai gained 47 yards to Swift's 45 on six fewer carries. Before halftime it was nine carries to three; after it, seven to seven. Inside the Minnesota 10, Monangai carried twice and Swift once.

Back in June the preview made no call on Monangai: the change of pace behind Swift, fairly priced, with growth depending on whether his share of the carries grew, and the split with Swift as the September watch. Week 1 was 10 carries to Swift's 18, with 61 of his hundred yards on one run, and the episode said to count the carries and not the yards. The count this week was 10 to 16. 10 10: the share has barely moved. What did move was who got the short-yardage snaps late, on the fourth-quarter drive, and that is one drive. Chicago is home to the Eagles on Monday the 20-eighth.
