Luther Burden III Smashed against the Patriots on four catches: 4 targets, 4 catches, 130 yards, a touchdown and +12.8 expected points added (EPA), his most yards in any game this season. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Every catch went for a first down, and 92 of the yards came after the catch.
The biggest came up 3-0 with 2:32 left in the first quarter. Second and 9 at the Chicago 38: Caleb Williams threw deep left, 18 yards in the air, and Burden carried it another 40 to the New England 4, +4.39 EPA. D'Andre Swift scored on the next snap. The touchdown came with 21 seconds left in the half, up 13-7, one snap after a 7-yard sack: third and 17 at the New England 24, he caught a short pass to the right behind the line of scrimmage and ran it in, +4.36 EPA, for a 20-7 lead after the extra point. Earlier on that drive his 22-yard catch on second and 11 drew a roughing-the-passer penalty that added 15. His 26-yarder opened Chicago's first drive, and a 7-yard run set up a field goal in the second quarter.
The +12.8 EPA was eight times what he had all season. Through Week 6 he had 43 targets, 31 catches, 361 yards, 1 touchdown and +1.6 EPA.
