Makai Lemon Camp Update — August 31: A Rusty Debut Starts the On-Ramp
2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31
Makai Lemon finally played — three catches on five targets for three yards in the preseason finale, with one throw sailing through his hands for an interception — after working with the first-team offense at the last camp practice. It was rusty, it came in a game no starter played, and it ended with his name on the fifty-three-man roster.
When Makai Lemon's week moves the numbers, you'll know — every episode, in one weekly email.

Makai Lemon's first live football as an Eagle finally happened, and it was rough: three catches on five targets for three yards in Friday's preseason finale against Cincinnati, per Olivia Reiner and Jeff McLane at the Philadelphia Inquirer, who called the debut rusty — and one Tanner McKee throw sailed through Lemon's hands and was intercepted by Bengals corner Tacario Davis, thrown a touch behind him but catchable, per the same account. Context before anyone panics about a three-yard line: McKee, who started, completed nothing longer than five yards to any wide receiver all night, per Reuben Frank at NBC Sports Philadelphia — the offense he was running lived short, not just the rookie.
The practice week around the debut was the better news. Lemon worked with the first-team offense at the final camp practice and stayed afterward for extra throwing with Jalen Hurts, per Jimmy Kempski at PhillyVoice — this after missing roughly three weeks with the hamstring. And on Sunday he was on the initial 53-man roster, listed third among six receivers, per Dave Zangaro at NBC Sports Philadelphia. That answers both things we said we'd check, and both answers are yes: he got to first-team work before the cutdown — Kempski's phrasing, first-team offense, is what we can say — and Philadelphia gave him finale snaps to start the on-ramp. The first live reps were poor. They exist now, which two weeks ago they did not.
One new complication: Hollywood Brown made the roster, per Zangaro, a veteran who appears in no earlier episode of ours, and his presence compresses the path to snaps for everyone behind DeVonta Smith. For a first-time listener: we declined to project Lemon in June — the first-round receiver arrived with genuine vacated targets waiting and a soft-tissue asterisk already attached — and August mostly proved the asterisk. This week moved the other way: practice, first-team work, a debut, a roster spot. The arrow points forward; the production simply has not followed it yet. We'll pick the thread back up as the opener approaches.
