Malik Willis threw more than one touchdown pass for the first time this season against the Jets: 14 of 21 for 208 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, plus 8 carries for 37 yards and a score. Over 28 dropbacks, two sacks and five scrambles included, he was worth +18.3 expected points added (EPA), what a play was worth given down, distance and field position, or +0.65 a dropback.
The throw that won it came up 21-17 with 4:55 left, after the Jets had cut a 14-point lead to four. On second and 7 at his own 37, he threw short left to Caleb Douglas 4 yards past the line, and Douglas ran the other 59 for a 63-yard touchdown: +5.71 EPA and 17.6 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win, the biggest swing of the game. After the Jets answered to make it 28-25, he went up the middle for 2 yards on fourth and 1 at the Jets' 49 with 2:00 left, +10.5 points of win probability, and knelt out the clock.
His legs carried the first half. All five scrambles gained positive EPA, 37 yards and +6.9 EPA together: 12 on third and 9 at the Jets' 23, 5 on fourth and 2 at the 41, and the 2-yard touchdown with 12 seconds left in the half for 21-7.
It was a break from his first five games. Through Week 5 he had completed 73 of 130 for 849 yards, 2 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, at -0.13 EPA per dropback over 160 dropbacks. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), which compares completions with what each throw's difficulty predicts, was -4.5 here, against -7.3 through Week 5.
