17 to 14, Raiders, three-oh-nine left in the game, second and seven at the Chargers 13. Ashton Jeanty had been injured on the play before, and Mike Washington took the handoff: right tackle, two yards to the 11. The carry was worth −0.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. On the next snap Kirk Cousins threw 11 yards to Cody White for the touchdown that made it a two-score game, and Jeanty was back on the following possession.
The line: three carries, seven yards, no first down, none of the three successful, −1.4 expected points on the carries. One target, incomplete. The first carry was three yards behind the left tackle on first and 10 at the Las Vegas 49 with 13 13 left in the second quarter, the first play of the drive that ended in Tre Tucker's 40-yard touchdown. The other two touches came in the fourth quarter: an incompletion short left on first and 10 at the Chargers 48 with 13 25 left, a two-yard run on the very next snap, and the two yards at the 13.
The split: Jeanty 21 designed runs, Washington three, Connor Heyward one on a fourth-and-one direct snap. Las Vegas ran 11 designed runs before halftime and 14 after, and Washington had one and two.
Back in June the preview called Washington a handcuff price on an unusually interesting athlete — the fastest back at the combine at 228 pounds, pick one 89, behind a starter who had just handled the biggest rookie workload in football — and said the thing to watch was whether the rotation was two men or three. Week 1 it was two, and he had seven carries for 41 yards. Sunday it was still two, and seven carries became three. The one moment the handcuff case showed itself was the snap after Jeanty went down, and it lasted one play. Two games in, the job is what the preview priced. Las Vegas is at the Saints on Sunday the 20-seventh.
