17 to 10, Chiefs, five 16 left in the game, second and 12 at the Miami 49. Patrick Mahomes threw deep right to Rashee Rice, 19 yards in the air, and Rice took it to the Miami 15, 34 yards. +2.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 5.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. After a Walker loss and a penalty, on second and 21, he caught 15 more to the 11, and on the next snap Travis Kelce caught the touchdown that made it 24 to 10. Nine targets, the most on the team and the most Rice has had in a game this season, after two in Week 1 and six in Week 2.
The line: nine targets, seven catches, 88 yards, no touchdown, two first downs, +0.2 expected points on the targets. 33 of the 88 yards came in the air and 55 after the catch. The catches went five, 11, four, 12, seven, 34 15. The five came on the opening drive, which Kenneth Walker finished; the four was the first snap of the second quarter, to the Miami nine, on the drive that ended in Walker's touchdown catch. The expected-points total is small because of one throw: second and eight at the Kansas City 49, two minutes left in the half, up 14 to seven, deep middle for Rice, intercepted at the Miami 29 and returned 18 yards. −3.6 expected points and −12.3 points of win probability, the largest win-probability swing on any Chiefs pass or run. His one third-down target, third and eight at the Kansas City 38 in the third quarter, fell incomplete and the Chiefs punted. Another third-down incompletion his way, from the Kansas City five, did not count: roughing the passer on Miami gave the Chiefs a first down on a drive that ended in a field goal. A holding call on Rice cut back an Xavier Worthy catch before halftime. Four targets before halftime, five after.
Nine targets on the 23 the Chiefs credited to a receiver is a share of 39 percent. Noah Gray had three; Kelce, Walker, Worthy and Tyquan Thornton two each. His 88 yards led both teams, ahead of Chris Bell's 67 for Miami and Kelce's 59.
Back in June the preview leaned watchlist on Rice — a receiver whose per-game rate ranked fifth at the position but was built on eight games and nearly 10 targets a game — and named two things to watch: any league or court news, then the target share in a full receiver room. Week 1 was two targets on a night the Chiefs ran the ball. Week 2 was six on 47 throws, and that episode said the thin share could no longer be blamed on a run-heavy script. Sunday ran against both: nine on a day Mahomes threw only 24 times, the closest he has come to the rate the preview was built on. Three games, 17 targets, 13 catches, a hundred 90 yards, one touchdown. One week does not make the share settled. Kansas City is at the Raiders on Sunday the fourth.
