Seven to three, Seattle, six 19 left in the second quarter, first and 10 at the Chargers' 28. Rashid Shaheed took the ball around left end and went 28 yards for the touchdown. +3.2 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 4.7 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Four snaps earlier Jaxon Smith-Njigba had converted a third and 16. The extra point missed, and it was 13 to three.
The line: two carries, 33 yards, one touchdown; three targets, one catch, 20 yards, one first down, −1.0 expected points on the targets. The other carry went five yards to the Chargers' 10 on Seattle's first drive of the second half, two snaps before Tory Horton's touchdown. The catch was deep right on second and seven early in the second quarter, out of bounds at the Chargers' 47; that drive ended in a punt after a deep incompletion to him on third and nine. The other incompletion was deep right on third and eight in the third quarter, on a drive that ended in a field goal. All three targets traveled 19 or more yards in the air, 65 air yards in all.
The returns: kickoffs of 31 to open the second half, 25 27, the ball coming out at the end of the last one and Shaheed recovering it himself. Punts of one and 12 yards, and two fair catches.
Back in June the preview made no call on Shaheed and framed him as one question: about 22 percent of the targets as the first option in New Orleans, about 10 and a half in Seattle. 10 percent means the Seattle role is the real one; past 15 means the New Orleans one is back. Sunday was three of 22 throws, 14 percent. Through four games it is 15 of a hundred 18, about 13 percent, seven catches for 73 yards, still between the two answers. The touchdown came on the ground.
