Six to nothing, Washington, 14 19 left in the second quarter against the Colts, third and seven at the Washington 18. Athan Kaliakmanis threw short right to Stefon Diggs for seven yards and the first down. +1.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and three and a half points of win probability, the chance of winning after the play against before it. It was the only one of his nine targets that moved the chains. The drive stalled at the Washington 27, and Washington punted.
The line: nine targets, five catches, 35 yards, one first down, −3.7 expected points on the targets, 92 air yards, five yards after the catch. Six targets came on third down, and five fell short: nine yards on third and 11 on the opening drive, five on third and seven, 10 on third and 12, and two incompletions. Down 27 to 13 early in the fourth, on second and one, he caught a deep ball for 21 yards to the Colts' 45, and offensive pass interference on Diggs wiped it out and moved Washington back nine.
Back in June the preview said that the day Diggs had a team with targets, the case for him would reopen. Last week's episode said the targets were holding and the touchdowns had stopped. Both are still true: nine targets, the team lead, and no touchdown, with Kaliakmanis throwing all but one of them. Four games: 31 targets, 18 catches, a hundred 70 yards, three touchdowns, all three in the first two weeks.
