2026 NFL Season · Sunday, Aug 23
Travis Etienne sat out again with the starters, but his week changed anyway: Alvin Kamara sprained his knee and is expected to miss about a month, and the rest of the backfield spent the week getting hurt. The committee question may not exist in September.

Travis Etienne still has not played a preseason snap, and the backfield he was signed into barely exists anymore. Alvin Kamara sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee at Tuesday's joint practice in Oxnard and is expected to miss about a month, per Adam Schefter at ESPN — a timeline that presses right against the September thirteenth opener. Behind them, Audric Estime is expected to miss time with an ankle, per Mike Triplett at NewOrleans.Football, and rookie Devin Neal limped out of Saturday's game after a four-yard run, per Luke Johnson at The Advocate. Etienne himself was held out of the 34 to nothing loss to the Rams along with all the starters, a plan Kellen Moore announced beforehand, per Pankti Parmar at Heavy.
Our June preview called the backfield split with Kamara the whole bet on Etienne — the situation, not the finish — and this week the situation rewrote itself without Etienne touching a ball. If the reported timelines hold, the committee's other half may not be available when the season opens, and the reporting on Kamara's camp usage — primarily passing downs, per Audacy — had already sketched a division of labor with Etienne carrying the early-down load.
The honest caveat: none of this is Etienne evidence. He has zero August game reps, and the one back who did get a live opportunity Saturday, C.J. Donaldson, ripped a 32-yard run before fumbling inside the five, per Ross Jackson at Louisiana Sports. What to watch: whether Etienne finally plays a drive in the finale against Dallas, and how the cut to 53 sorts a running back room with this many injury flags on it. We'll check after cut day.
