Tyler Allgeier's week was defined by what happened to everyone else in his room. Jeremiyah Love — the rookie drafted third overall to lead this backfield — had his ankle rediagnosed as a high ankle sprain, per ESPN's reporting relayed by Darren Urban at the team website, went the entire week without a practice rep, and sat Saturday's 34 to 13 loss to Dallas. James Conner has still not taken an 11-on-11 rep, and head coach Mike LaFleur declined to offer any timeline at all — "I'm not going to give you a timeline on it because we don't know that timeline yet," per Tyler Drake at Arizona Sports. Trey Benson is dealing with a knee flareup at an awkward moment for his roster standing, per Drake, and depth back Bam Knight was held out of the Dallas game entirely, which Drake reads as the sitting of a player whose spot is safe. That arithmetic leaves Allgeier as the healthiest back in the building with a real resume, one week before rosters cut to 53.
The one thing the week did not produce is a charted Allgeier stat line: none of the attributable accounts of the Dallas game broke out the running back touches, in a half where Gardner Minshew went 19 of 23 and the drives kept dying on penalties, per the Associated Press.
Back in June we said the Allgeier bet was his job rather than his talent — the complement role behind Love, +1 genuinely elite stat, 67 straight games played — because availability next to injured teammates is how goal-line jobs get kept. This was another week of exactly that arithmetic.
Watch the short-yardage and goal-line work if he plays in Friday's finale at Green Bay, and watch what cutdown does to a backfield whose depth chart currently lives in the training room — Benson's spot in particular, per Drake's framing. We'll check after cut day.
