Woody Marks took over Houston's backfield against the Titans and lost his one trip to the end zone: 15 carries, 62 yards, 4 catches, 23 yards. He was worth -1.8 expected points added (EPA) on the ground, what a play was worth given down, distance and field position, with a 33% success rate, the share of carries that added positive EPA.
The run that would have defined his day came late in the first quarter. Down 3-0, second and 10 at the Tennessee 24, he went 24 yards around right tackle for a touchdown, wiped out by an offensive holding penalty. Moments later his 1-yard catch on third and 14 left Houston to settle for a field goal and a 3-3 tie.
He was stopped twice in scoring range: no gain on third and 2 at the Tennessee 17 early in the second quarter, and 1 yard on first and 3 at the 3 in the third, before C.J. Stroud ran it in from the 2. His best carries were three 12-yarders.
The workload is new. 15 carries followed 9, 8, 5 and 6 in Weeks 1 through 4, when he had 87 yards, 2 touchdowns and -4.1 EPA on 28 carries.
