Bryce Young had his hardest day of the season against the Buccaneers: 14 of 27 for 163 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions, five sacks, and a 43-13 loss at home on Sunday. Over 33 dropbacks, sacks and a scramble included, he was worth -20.2 expected points added (EPA), what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Kenny Pickett played the fourth quarter.
The snap that defined it came down 10-0 early in the second. A 30-yard run had just come back on a holding penalty, and on third and 14 at his own 40, Al-Quadin Muhammad sacked him and forced a fumble that Calijah Kancey returned 32 yards for a touchdown: -7.69 EPA and 10.9 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win. On the next possession, second and 5 at midfield, he threw deep middle to Darren Waller for a 50-yard touchdown, +4.49 EPA. Zyon McCollum intercepted a throw for Jalen Coker late in the half, and Tykee Smith one for John Metchie III in the third. His 14-play drive in the third reached the Tampa Bay 5 and ended on an incompletion on fourth and 1.
It was well off his season. Through Week 6 he was at +0.21 EPA per dropback over 217 dropbacks, with 11 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in five games; here it was -0.61, and he matched that interception total in one afternoon. Completion percentage over expected (CPOE), which compares completions with what each throw's difficulty predicts, was -15.7, against +3.0 through Week 6. His 163 yards were his fewest of the season.
