Show notes & transcript

Jonathon Brooks is the thirty-seventh running back off the board at pick one-oh-nine, and here is the entire verified NFL record that price is buying: three games. Nine carries. Twenty-two rushing yards, three catches, twenty-three more yards, no touchdowns. Everything else is a medical file and a projection.

We build these shows on a simple rule — never say a number we didn't look up — and for Brooks the honest report is that the twenty-twenty-five tape does not exist. He didn't play a snap. So this episode works differently: the record, the timeline, and what nobody can know.

The timeline, all of it attributed: he tore his right ACL in November twenty-twenty-three at Texas, per NFL.com. Carolina drafted him forty-sixth overall anyway in twenty-twenty-four. That made him the first running back taken in his class, per NFL.com — the pedigree part of this price is real. He debuted that December — and in his third career game, tore the same reconstructed ACL, per NFL.com. He missed every game of twenty-twenty-five. On April twenty-eighth of this year he told reporters his surgeon had cleared him — quote, I've been cleared to go, I feel close to a hundred percent — per the Charlotte Observer and NFL.com.

Here's what our pattern library says, which is: nothing usable, and we'd rather tell you that than fake it. Our injury pattern prices established players coming off short seasons — ninety-three cases, median return seventy percent of the prior year's scoring. It requires a prior year. And the one-in-three who do get back to eighty-five percent — those are players with a real season to return to. He's trying to have his first. Brooks has nine career carries and two reconstructions of the same knee, twenty months between meaningful snaps. There is no cohort for that. Anyone quoting you a confident projection is selling confidence, not data.

What we can verify is the opportunity. Carolina won the NFC South at eight and nine — a division winner with a four seed. Rico Dowdle, who led the team in rushing at a thousand seventy-six yards, left for Pittsburgh in March on a two-year deal, per NFL.com. That leaves Chuba Hubbard atop the room, Trevor Etienne behind him, and a staff change: coordinator Brad Idzik takes over play-calling, announced at the Combine, per the team site. Veteran AJ Dillon is also in the room, per NFL.com. And the stage got bigger: that eight-and-nine division title was Carolina's first playoff berth since twenty-seventeen. The spring reporting is warm — A to Z Sports in June described Brooks as an OTA standout with the staff intending a sizable role, and floated a genuine RB1 debate.

The price: pick one-oh-nine for a cleared knee, second-round pedigree, and a backfield that just lost its leading rusher. Our verdict: no call — on purpose. There is no production to price, and we don't put verdicts on medical files. What we'll say plainly: the market is paying RB37 for a lottery ticket, and for once the ticket's odds are unknowable rather than bad. In twelve-team terms RB37 is the first pick of the bench rounds — a price for possibility, not production. If the spring reports are right, this is the cheapest starting-caliber back in the range. If the knee has other plans, there was never a floor.

Watch whether he stacks back-to-back padded practices in camp without a maintenance day, and who takes the first passing-down snaps in the preseason. Back-to-back padded days are the real medical report — staffs protect rebuilt knees from exactly that until they trust them. If he's on your roster, this show covers all of it — every player, every week, all season.
