Bryce Young was sacked six times against the Packers, his most this season, and threw deep only once in a 27-19 loss at Green Bay on Thursday night. He completed 23 of 41 for 209 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Over 47 dropbacks, sacks included, he was worth -7.6 expected points added (EPA), what a play was worth given down, distance and field position, or -0.16 per dropback.
The throw that defined it came down 13-10 with 5:23 left in the half. Third and 3 at the Carolina 48: he threw short left for Jalen Coker, and Ty'Ron Hopper intercepted at the 44, -4.43 EPA and 12.9 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win, the largest swing of the game. Green Bay scored a touchdown five plays later for 20-10. His best answer came down 27-13 with 5:45 left: fourth and 3 at the Green Bay 26, he hit Coker over the middle for a 26-yard touchdown, +4.96 EPA. His last chance ended on fourth and 5 at midfield, an incompletion for Tetairoa McMillan with 2:46 left.
The ball stayed close to the line. His passes averaged 4.1 air yards, the distance thrown past the line of scrimmage, against 8.8 through Week 7, when he had thrown deep 42 times in six games. Through Week 7 he was at +0.11 EPA per dropback over 251 dropbacks, with 12 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Completion percentage over expected (CPOE), which compares completions with what each throw's difficulty predicts, was -6.0, against +0.7 through Week 7.
