Chuba Hubbard made the 53, and he made it clean — no injured reserve, no PUP, no designation of any kind. He appears in none of the reserve-list moves in Darin Gantt's cutdown ledger at the team's site, and the coach spent the week on the record about it: Dave Canales said the team expects Hubbard ready for Week One, and said he thought Hubbard had hit over 20 miles per hour the other day, per Kole Noble at A to Z Sports; a day later Canales said he is "ahead of schedule" and "doing a great job," per Josh Alper at Pro Football Talk. Here is the shape of that evidence, though: it is a roster answer and a coach's answer, not a practice log. Our last episode said the thing to watch was whether Hubbard practiced before the cut — the checkable version of Canales's confidence — and that check never came. No reporting in the window has him back in a full team practice — Alper's report has him doing rehab work during practice rather than taking part in one — and the most specific in-window statement runs the other way: he was held from contact because, in Canales's words, he is "not ready for someone to pull on his jersey and have him pull through that," per Alper. Canales attached a caveat to the 20-mile-an-hour number in the same breath, per Alper: it came in return-to-play work, in a controlled setting, not in team drills. The finale answered nothing either — Hubbard didn't dress, but neither did anyone in the starting group, held out by mutual agreement of Canales and DeMeco Ryans, per Kassidy Hill at the team's site.

What he returns to is now defined. Canales said Carolina will keep the setup it has been running — a lead back for the series, the other back on third down — with the Week One starter between Hubbard and Jonathon Brooks decided closer to the game, per Rizzuti. And the room got thinner behind him: Trevor Etienne went to injured reserve designated to return after an ankle injury in the finale, with AJ Dillon expected as the third back, per CBS Sports.

The thread, briefly: our June preview framed Hubbard as a usage question inside a stated committee, and the last episode watched the role math drift toward Brooks with every week Hubbard missed. The drift has stopped — the coach's own August language is the committee again, starter undecided. What the week never supplied is proof of the hamstring in a real practice.
