22 to 19, Panthers, against the Lions, three 28 left in the third quarter, first and 10 at the Detroit 27. Chuba Hubbard went behind the right guard for 25 yards to the Detroit two. +2.0 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 6.5 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. On the next snap he went up the middle from two yards for the touchdown, 28 to 19 before the kick, the end of an 85-yard drive.

The line: 20 carries, a hundred 22 yards, two touchdowns, eight first downs, 10 of the 20 successful, +3.6 expected points on the carries; two targets, one catch, seven yards. The first touchdown was 15 yards off left tackle on first and 10 from the Detroit 15, one 56 left in the first quarter, and gave Carolina its first lead, seven to three. The longest run was the first snap of the fourth quarter, 32 yards off left tackle from the Carolina 14, and two snaps later he added 12 more; that drive ended in a field goal and a 32 to 19 lead. Those four runs, 15, 25, 32 12, made 84 yards. The other 16 made 38, including two losses of four in the first half. Eight carries for 26 yards before halftime, 12 for 96 after.

Carolina's running backs carried 25 times, and Hubbard had 20; AJ Dillon had the other five for two yards, including a two-yard loss on third and two in the fourth quarter.

Back in June the preview made Hubbard a usage question in a committee built to shift away from him. Weeks 1 and 2 he had 10 12 of the running backs' carries, with Jonathon Brooks taking four and five; last week it was 19 of 23. This week the share held at 20 of 25, and the yards came with it. Weeks 1 through 3 were 41 carries for a hundred 84 yards and one rushing touchdown. Four games: 61 carries, 306 yards, three rushing touchdowns, +2 touchdown catches. Two straight weeks of nearly all the work answers the usage question for now; four games settle little about how long it lasts.
