C.J. Stroud's first throw against the Cowboys went 45 yards. First and 10 at the Houston 15, nothing to nothing: deep over the middle to Nico Collins at the Dallas 40, +2.9 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Seven snaps later it was third and three at the seven, and Stroud hit Collins short over the middle for the touchdown. On the next Houston drive, second and one from his own 17, he threw deep left to Jaylin Noel for 52 yards, +3.1, the most of any Houston play. First quarter: six of seven for a hundred 29 yards.
The line: 21 completions on 29 throws, not counting two spikes, for 347 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions and two sacks. His 31 pass plays were worth +15 expected points, about plus point five a play, and 61 percent of them were successful. Eight throws traveled 20 or more yards in the air; four were caught, for a hundred 17 yards. The second touchdown was 22 yards deep right to Collins on second and six in the third, up 16 to 13. On third down: nine pass plays, three conversions, two sacks. The one that hurt was third and three at the Houston 42 with nine 31 left, down 27 to 23, an 11-yard sack, −2.5, 11 points of win probability, and a punt. On the next drive he threw for 26 to Xavier Hutchinson, 13 to Collins on third and two and 22 to Noel, and found Dalton Schultz on third and 14 for the catch-and-lateral that set up the go-ahead touchdown. His last drive, down 34 to 30, reached the Dallas 48 before a deep throw fell incomplete with nine seconds left.
Back in June the preview read Stroud as a pocket-first passer with two flat seasons behind him. Week 1 was 274 yards and two touchdowns, Week 2 55 throws and none, Week 3 27 throws and one. Sunday's 347 yards were six fewer than Week 2's on 24 fewer attempts. Four games: 93 of a hundred 51, 1141 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions, 12 sacks. The no-interception line has held through four games.
