C.J. Stroud carried Houston's offense in a 34-31 win over the Jaguars: 24 of 34, 312 yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 interception and +13.1 expected points added (EPA) on 35 dropbacks. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. That is +0.37 per dropback, against +0.13 through Week 5.
He nearly gave it away. Up 31-28 with 3:59 left, second and 4 at the Jacksonville 4, he threw short right for Xavier Hutchinson and Travis Hunter intercepted it in the end zone: -6.0 EPA and -24.1 points of win probability, his first interception of the season. Jacksonville tied it at 31. Then he answered: with 1:04 left, third and 2 at the Houston 40, he hit Woody Marks short right for 19 yards to the Jacksonville 41, +1.5 EPA and +15.1 points of win probability, and the drive ended in the winning field goal.
The big plays built the lead. Down 14-10 with 48 seconds left in the half, he found Jaylin Noel deep over the middle for 50 yards to the Jacksonville 13, +3.3 EPA, and hit Foster Moreau for a 1-yard touchdown and a 17-14 halftime lead. Moreau also caught a 6-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and Noel caught a 13-yarder on third and 10 in the third for 24-14.
He was more accurate than his start: completion percentage over expected (CPOE), which compares completions with what each throw's difficulty predicts, was +11.5, against +2.5 through Week 5. He was not sacked, after 14 sacks through Week 5.
