Dallas Goedert — Week 1: Two Touchdowns, Both on Third Down

Goedert caught four of five targets for seventy-seven yards and two touchdowns — seventeen yards deep right on third and seventeen in the second quarter and forty-three yards short middle on third and six with six twelve left that put Philadelphia up 24–16. Four of his five targets came on third down, and his five were worth plus eight point three expected points, the most of any Eagle, in a 24–22 win over the Commanders.

17 to 16, six 12 left in the fourth quarter, third and six at the Washington 43. Jalen Hurts short middle to Dallas Goedert, 43 yards, touchdown. The play was worth +5.0 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — the largest figure on any Eagles pass or run all afternoon, and 14.6 points of win probability, the chance of winning after the play against before it, second only to Hurts's 22-yard scramble on third and 18 earlier in the same drive. 24 to 16. Washington's answer got to 22, and the two-point try failed.
The other touchdown was also third down. Third and 17 at the Washington 17, 14 17 left in the second quarter, Eagles down three to nothing, the snap after a one-yard Saquon Barkley run: deep right to Goedert, 17 yards, +3.9 expected points and 11.1 points of win probability. Five targets, four catches, 77 yards, two touchdowns, three first downs, +8.3 on the targets, the highest figure for any Eagle. The other three: second and five at the Philadelphia 34 with one 21 left in the half, short right for five and the first down; third and 14 at the Philadelphia 22 with 13 31 left in the third, short left, 12 yards, out of bounds at the 34, two short, and a punt; and third and three at the Washington 17 with 52 seconds left in the third, incomplete short left, −1.7, before the field goal that made it 17 to nine. Four of the five targets came on third down, and two of the four were touchdowns. Two catches for 22 yards before halftime, two for 55 after. 77 led the Eagles in receiving yards — Dontayvion Wicks had 73, DeVonta Smith 53.
Six throws went to Smith, five to Goedert, four each to Wicks and Makai Lemon, two to Barkley, one to Will Shipley, and three carry no receiver; 25 throws on 28 pass plays, 16 before halftime and 12 after. The 14 completions were four to Goedert, three each to Smith and Lemon, two to Wicks, and one each to Barkley and Shipley. The three touchdowns went Goedert, Wicks, Goedert.
Back in June the preview made no call on Goedert — TE14 at pick one 15, the market having already done the math on an 11-touchdown season from a player who had never scored more than five, on targets that had sat around five and a half a game for years — and it said to watch the September target rate against that baseline. Sunday was five targets, right at the baseline, and two touchdowns, which is the part the preview said would not repeat. One game cannot settle a regression argument; it can note that on this one the touchdowns came anyway, on third and 17 and third and six. Philadelphia is at the Titans on Sunday the twentieth.
