Dallas Goedert's afternoon in the play-by-play is two snaps on the opening drive. First and 10 at the Tennessee 47, 11 47 left in the first quarter, no huddle: Jalen Hurts short middle, incomplete, −0.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Second and nine at the Tennessee 32, nine 27 left: short left, four yards to the 28, −0.1. Those were the third and fourth of Hurts's 37 throws. None of the next 33 went to him.
The line: two targets, one catch, four yards, no first downs, −0.6 expected points on the two. The reporting explains at least part of the rest. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Goedert hurt a knee early in the second quarter, one play before Tank Bigsby's touchdown, and that the Eagles listed him as questionable to return. The play-by-play carries no injury note for him, and nothing in it says how much he played after that.
Tight ends were thrown to five times in all: Goedert's two and three to Johnny Mundt, who caught two for eight yards, all three after halftime. The ball went to DeVonta Smith 13 times and Dontayvion Wicks six, and the touchdowns went to Smith and Darius Cooper.
Back in June the preview made no call on Goedert — the fourteenth tight end off the board at pick one 15, after an 11-touchdown season from a player who had not scored more than five before it, on targets that had sat around five and a half a game for years — and it said to watch the September target rate against that baseline. Week 1 was five targets, 77 yards and two touchdowns, both on third down. Sunday was two targets and four yards in a game he may not have finished. Seven targets in two games is under the baseline, and the knee, not the count, is the thing that decides what comes next. Philadelphia is at the Bears on Monday the 20-eighth.
