Daniel Jones moved the ball against the Steelers but could not finish drives: 24 of 44, 267 yards, no touchdown passes, no interceptions, 1 sack. He was worth -0.1 expected points added (EPA) on 45 dropbacks, roughly break-even. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. Indianapolis had 10 drives: 1 touchdown and 5 field goals.

The defining sequence came down 17-13 early in the third. Second and 8 at the Pittsburgh 32, he threw deep left to Tyler Warren for 29 yards to the 3, +2.7 EPA and +11.0 points of win probability. Two runs later it was third and 4 at the 4, and his short throw right for Keenan Allen fell incomplete: -1.5 EPA and -6.1 points of win probability. The drive ended 17-16. Early in the fourth, down 24-19, he threw three straight incompletions from the Pittsburgh 10, and it ended 24-22.

He kept drives alive on fourth down twice: a 2-yard run on fourth and 1 in the second quarter, +1.8 EPA, and a 4-yard throw to Allen on fourth and 3 in the fourth, +2.6 EPA.

Against his baseline it was a step up. Weeks 1 through 4 brought -29.5 EPA on 144 dropbacks, -0.21 per dropback, and an interception in each game; this was his first without one. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was -4.4, after -1.7 through Week 4. 44 attempts were his most of the season.
