De'Von Achane — Week 1: Eleven Carries, Thirty-Six Yards

Achane carried eleven times for thirty-six yards with no touchdowns and three successful carries, and caught four of five targets for thirty yards, including a fourteen-yard third-and-five conversion on Miami's first drive. He had eight carries before halftime and three after, none in the fourth quarter, in a 27–13 loss to the Raiders.

De'Von Achane's best play Sunday came on the fifth snap of Miami's season. Third and five at the Miami 41, 12 14 left in the first quarter, no score: Malik Willis short left, Achane to the Las Vegas 45, 14 yards and a first down. The catch was worth +2.1 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and +6.2 points of win probability, the chance of winning after the play against before it, and only Willis's touchdown scramble and a 25-yarder to Caleb Douglas gained more win probability on any Dolphins pass or run. The drive did not score.
The rushing line: 11 carries, 36 yards, no touchdowns, two first downs, three of the 11 successful, and −2.7 expected points on the carries. The longest was 10, second and 10 at the Miami 35 with 10 16 left in the half, down 10 to nothing, behind the left tackle. The one that hurt was on the same drive: third and one at the Las Vegas 22 with four 54 left in the half, right guard, −1, −1.9 expected points and −4.3 points of win probability, and Miami settled for a field goal. The first quarter was three carries for four yards; the second was five for 22; the third was three for 10, the last of them two yards around left end on second and seven at the Las Vegas 15 with one 39 left, on a drive that ended with a 10-yard sack and no points. He did not carry in the fourth quarter. The receiving line: five targets, four catches, 30 yards, one first down, +1.4 expected points — two catches for 21 before halftime, two for nine after, and one incompletion.
The split: Achane 11, Willis six — five of them scrambles — and Jaylen Wright one. Miami ran nine designed runs before halftime and four after, against 14 pass plays and 18; 13 designed runs all day, and 11 were his. The ball went eight times to Malik Washington, seven to Douglas, five to Achane, two each to Chris Bell, Greg Dulcich and Kevin Coleman Jr., one to Will Kacmarek; 16 of the Dolphins' 50 pass and run plays went through him.
Back in June the preview called Achane a lean, underpriced — the fifth-ranked back a year ago at 5.7 a carry, priced seventh at pick 14, with no red flag in the pattern library — and said the two things to watch were the offense's functionality under Willis and the carry share. Sunday the share was 11 of 13 designed runs, and the functionality was 13 points, 36 yards on the 11 four second-half runs for the whole team. One game in a 14-point loss does not touch the production case; the game script the preview named as the risk arrived in week one. Miami is at the 49ers on Sunday the twentieth.
