George Pickens made the offensive play of Tuesday's joint practice against the Saints, going up over coverage for a leaping catch on a deep ball from Dak Prescott, per Randy Gurzi at Cowboys On SI. On a day mostly remembered for its fights — Donovan Ezeiruaku was ejected and Brian Schottenheimer called it "a little chippy," per Adam Schultz at Roundtable — that grab was the cleanest thing the first-team offense put on film outside of Prescott's three red-zone touchdowns on six situational snaps, whose recipients no reporter logged. Saturday, Pickens sat the 34 to 13 win in Arizona along with most starters on both sides, per the Associated Press.

That is the whole week: one spectacular rep, no injuries, no contract noise, no games. He is playing out a one-year deal in a receiver room where CeeDee Lamb is healthy, present, and rested through the same games Pickens rested through, so the two have still not been measured against each other anywhere that counts, and the practice files this week did not chart the first-team target distribution at all.

Back in June we noted that Pickens' top-shelf finish last season leaned on the month Lamb missed — 427 of his 1400 receiving yards came in those four games as the lone alpha — and that alongside a healthy Lamb, the strong-complement version is the one to expect unless the target math changes. A contested deep ball in a padded practice is that role at its best, and it moves the target math not at all.

The checkable things: whether Pickens and the first unit play a series in the preseason finale before rosters cut to 53 on Sunday, August 30, and where the first-team targets go if they do. We'll check after cut day.
