28 to six, 49ers, five 40 left in the third quarter, first and 10 at the Miami 33. Malik Willis threw short right to Greg Dulcich, who was pushed out of bounds at the Miami 44, 11 yards and a first down. +0.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. The drive did nothing with it. A holding penalty cut back a De'Von Achane run on the next snap, Achane gained three, two incompletions followed, and on fourth and 15 the punter fumbled the snap and San Francisco took over at the Miami 28. Two plays later it was 35 to six.
The line: three targets, two catches, 17 yards, one first down, +0.2 expected points on the targets. The other catch was six yards on first and 20 at the Miami 22 with eight oh three left in the fourth, on a ball caught behind the line. The incompletion was first and 10 at the San Francisco 17 with 13 18 left in the second quarter, short right, with Upton Stout credited on the play, on the drive that ended in a field goal. 15 of the 17 yards came after the catch. A fourth throw, incomplete short right one snap before the six-yarder, came back on a holding penalty and is not in his line. None of the three targets was on third down.
Among tight ends the targets went Dulcich three, the rookie Will Kacmarek one, a four-yard catch on third and 11. Three of 23 Willis throws is about an eighth of them; De'Von Achane had six and Malik Washington five.
Back in June the preview made no call on Dulcich — a one-year prove-it deal at the top of a tight-end room Miami had crowded with two drafted rookies — and said to watch the battle with Kacmarek and where Willis's short throws land. Week 1 was two targets, both caught, both before halftime, and the episode said the number to watch was two. Sunday the number was three, two of them after halftime, and the split with Kacmarek went three to one after two to one. Two games, five targets, four catches, 35 yards. The order in the room has held twice; the volume is still small enough that one game could change its shape. Miami is home to the Chiefs on Sunday the 20-seventh.
