Jacory Croskey-Merritt Camp Update — August 31: The blocking half of the job

The week handed Jacory Croskey-Merritt the biggest volume fact of his camp, and two days ahead of it, the most interesting sentence. The sentence came Friday, from Philip Hughes at Commanders On SI: the team site's own writer, Zach Selby, asked whether Croskey-Merritt's pass blocking had come far enough to earn third-down work, said the improvement had been one of the main things that stood out this summer in camp. Hughes built the piece around what that would mean, and he kept it conditional — if Croskey-Merritt can stay on the field for all three downs, Washington no longer has to treat him as an early-down runner. All August this file tracked a receiving experiment, the deliberate diet of pass-catching work for a back who caught nine balls as a rookie; the reporting that finally arrived is about blocking, the other gate on a passing-down role. One is not an answer to the other — but they are halves of the same job, and the club's own writer is describing one half as coming along.

The volume fact: Washington's active backfield is three men. Jeremy McNichols went to injured reserve at cutdown and must miss the first four games, per Hughes; Craig Reynolds and Robert Henry Jr. were released the same day, per Zach Selby at the team site. That leaves Croskey-Merritt, Rachaad White and sixth-round rookie Kaytron Allen, with Croskey-Merritt named atop the room in the beat's same-day coverage, per Dean Jones at Riggo's Rag. The rookie résumé under all of it is verified in our numbers: 805 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on a hundred 75 carries last season.

Last week we asked whether he would play Friday and whether any passing-down reps would go his way against the Ravens. The first is answered, and it is a no: Washington named Croskey-Merritt on the 41-player list it declared out of the finale, per the team's announcement, so his preseason ended without a snap. The second has no answer — the joint-practice recap never mentions him. What the week produced instead was the blocking report above, an answer from a direction the question did not expect. Back in June our preview called the catches the whole swing factor for a back whose rookie value leaned on touchdown rate; that experiment is still unmeasured in games, and the three-down case now runs on two tracks instead of one.
