Three to nothing, Washington, eight 28 left in the first quarter against the Colts, third and six at the Indianapolis 42. Marcus Mariota threw short left to Jacory Croskey-Merritt, a yard behind the line, and Croskey-Merritt took it 36 yards from the catch before he was pushed out at the seven. +3.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 7.7 points of win probability, the chance of winning after the play against before it. The next snap went to him too, short middle, incomplete. Washington got no closer than the five and kicked a field goal.
The line: nine carries, 15 yards, one first down, two of the nine successful, −3.7 expected points on the carries; four targets, two catches, 35 yards. The carries went three, −4, two, six, two, two, −2, five and one. The −4 came from the Colts' 18, after the opening strip-sack; the five, on second and three, was the first down. The last target was fourth and one at the Washington 46 with eight 19 left, down 27 to 13, short right and incomplete, and the Colts took over.
He had nine of Washington's 20 designed runs, Austin Ekeler four and Kaytron Allen three. Back in June the preview made no call on Croskey-Merritt and said to watch the targets. Weeks 1 through 3 had one target each. Sunday he had four, more than the first three games combined, and the carries fell to nine, his fewest of the season. Four games: 56 carries for a hundred 57 yards, one touchdown, five catches on seven targets for 40.
