Down 22 to 16 against the Panthers, seven 53 left in the third quarter, first and 25 at the Detroit 31 after an unnecessary roughness flag. Jared Goff threw deep left to Isaac TeSlaa, 52 yards in the air, and TeSlaa was brought down at the Carolina 12 after 57. +4.0 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 15.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the biggest swing of the game. Then a four-yard run, an incompletion to Jahmyr Gibbs, and on third and six at the eight, an incompletion to Sam LaPorta. Detroit kicked a 26-yard field goal, and Carolina answered with a touchdown.

The line: 32 of 52, 412 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, sacked once, and +12.3 expected points on 53 pass plays. The halves: 13 of 21 for a hundred 53 before the break, 19 of 31 for 259 after, with Detroit chasing. Five throws traveled 20 or more yards in the air; two were caught, the 57 to TeSlaa and 49 to Jameson Williams, and each ended in a field goal. On third down: 12 pass plays, four conversions. On fourth: three throws, one conversion, the seven-yarder to LaPorta at the 10 that set up the eight-yard touchdown to him with three 42 left. The other two came up seven yards and one yard short, the second on the final snap, fourth and 13 at the Detroit 10, 12 yards to TeSlaa.

He spread 51 targets across seven Lions: 13 to LaPorta, 11 to Amon-Ra St. Brown, eight each to Williams and TeSlaa, seven to Gibbs, two each to Sione Vaki and Brock Wright.

Back in June the preview's read on Goff was the flattest line in his range, with a rebuilt offensive line and a new play-caller as the unknowns. Weeks 1 through 3: 77 of a hundred nine, 802 yards, eight touchdowns, no interceptions, seven sacks. Four games: a hundred nine of a hundred 61, 1214 yards, nine touchdowns, still no interceptions, eight sacks. 52 attempts were 13 more than any earlier game this season. The line stays steady; this week the yards came without the touchdowns.
