Jayden Daniels — Week 8: 217 Yards, 53 on One Throw

Jayden Daniels beat the Eagles 27-10 at home without much help from his completion rate: 16 of 29 for 217 yards and a touchdown, no interceptions, two sacks, and two scrambles for 23 yards. Over 33 dropbacks he was worth +4.4 expected points added (EPA), what a play was worth given down, distance and field position, +0.13 per dropback. That count includes his scrambles and charges him for the throw, not for Chig Okonkwo's fumble after an 11-yard catch in the first quarter.

The throw that defined his day came one snap after the defense took the ball back. Up 13-10 with 2:51 left in the third quarter, first and 10 at the Washington 40, Daniels went deep right to Treylon Burks for 53 yards to the Philadelphia 7: +3.3 EPA and 7.9 points of win probability, the estimate of each side's chance to win. His next two throws from the 7 fell incomplete, and Washington kicked a field goal for 16-10. His touchdown tied the game at 10 with 5:01 left in the half, 8 yards short right to Stefon Diggs on first and goal, two snaps after his own 14-yard scramble on second and 7. Up 16-10 in the fourth, his 30-yarder to Antonio Williams on second and 8 keyed the drive to a 42-yard field goal.

The first quarter was the hard part. He completed 1 of his first 5 throws, and third-down incompletions ended each of the first two drives, in a 55-yard miss and a three-and-out.

Per dropback it was his season. Through Week 7 he was at +0.14, +20.7 EPA on 145 dropbacks in four games. The accuracy was not: completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was -1.2, against +7.4 through Week 7. In Week 1 against the same Eagles he completed 18 of 34 for 164 yards and two touchdowns.
