29 to 26, Patriots, a minute 14 left, second and six at the Buffalo 40. Josh Allen had needed a field goal to tie, with all three timeouts. He threw deep left for Josh Palmer, and Woodson intercepted at the New England 19. −1.7 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and −27 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the biggest swing on any play of the game. The Patriots converted one third down and ran out the clock.
Four minutes earlier he had put Buffalo ahead. Down 21 to 20, third and four at the Buffalo 42, Allen threw short left to Keon Coleman for 24 yards, +2.4. No huddle, and on the next snap he went deep middle to Coleman for 34 yards and the touchdown, +3.5 and 15 points of win probability. The two-point throw to Palmer fell incomplete.
The line: 23 of 33, 253 yards, one touchdown, one interception, one sack for four yards, +3.7 expected points on 34 pass plays. 14 of 18 for a hundred 54 before halftime, nine of 15 for 99 after, six of nine for 90 in the fourth quarter. On the ground, five carries for four yards and a touchdown: third and one at the New England two with a minute three left in the half, up the middle, 14 to 14 after the kick. One of the five was a first-quarter snap he fumbled and Cook recovered. The throws went eight to Khalil Shakir, seven to Coleman, four to Palmer, two each to Cook, Dawson Knox, DJ Moore, Ty Johnson and Dalton Kincaid, and one to Ray Davis.
The June preview's case on Allen was a floor made of legs, passing volume plus sustained rushing, with the rushing touchdowns the part least likely to repeat. He had two rushing touchdowns in each of the first three games, six in all; Sunday was one. The passing half: five touchdown passes and two interceptions over the first three weeks, one and one on Sunday. Four games: six touchdown passes, three interceptions, seven rushing touchdowns, and the first loss.
