13 to 10, Chargers, 12 41 left in the fourth quarter, third and five at the Buffalo 47. Josh Allen threw short left to Khalil Shakir, six yards to the Chargers 47 and a first down. +1.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 6.9 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The drive went on to Allen's touchdown from the one, the score that put Buffalo ahead for good.
The line: three targets, one catch, six yards, one first down, −0.1 expected points on the targets. The incompletions were second and nine at the Chargers 10 in the second quarter, on the drive that ended in a field goal, and second and six at the Chargers 43 on the go-ahead drive, two snaps before the fourth-down throw to Ty Johnson. One target before halftime, two after. His one third-down target was the conversion.
Three targets tied him with Dalton Kincaid, behind DJ Moore's 10 and Johnson's four, three of Allen's 26 throws.
Back in June the preview's question on Shakir was whether last season had rested on a repeatable target share or a quieter efficiency spike. Week 1 was six targets and 50 yards; Week 2 six and 38, with Moore gone early. Sunday, with Moore back for a full game, it was three and six. Three games: 15 targets, eight catches, 94 yards. The share that looked settled after two weeks halved in the third. Three games settle little. Buffalo is home to the Patriots on Sunday the fourth.
