Washington led the Dolphins with 10 targets and caught 5 for 56 yards and two first downs, the longest a 30-yarder on the first drive; a 14-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter came back on an illegal shift. All three of his deep targets and both third-down targets fell incomplete, and he returned two kickoffs for 55 yards, in a 24–10 loss to the Chiefs.

14 to seven, Chiefs, 11 46 left in the third quarter, second and 13 at the Kansas City 14. Malik Willis threw short right to Malik Washington for 14 yards and a touchdown, and an illegal shift on Miami took it off the board. Three snaps later Miami kicked a 37-yard field goal. What would have tied the game at 14 became 14 to 10.
The line that stands: 10 targets, five catches, 56 yards, no touchdown, two first downs, −3.5 expected points added on the targets — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. The catches went 30, one, nine, 11 five. The 30 was second and seven at the Miami 36 on the first drive, three yards in the air and 27 after it, to the Kansas City 34, and that drive ended in Ollie Gordon's touchdown. The 11 opened a third-quarter drive with a first down. The misses carried the cost: fourth and four at the Kansas City 49 in the second quarter, short middle, incomplete, and the ball went over on downs; and three deep throws — 43, 32 25 yards in the air — all incomplete, two of them on third down, third and nine in the third quarter and third and one with two-oh-nine left. Two third-down targets, neither caught. Five targets before halftime, five after. He also carried twice for five yards and returned two kickoffs, 33 22 yards.
10 targets were the most on the team, 29 percent of the 35 Willis credited to a receiver. Chris Bell and Greg Dulcich had seven each. His 56 yards were second on the team to Bell's 67.
Back in June the preview called Washington a watchlist — the one returning Miami wideout who had earned targets, a 14 percent share a year ago, and a vacancy above him that nobody had claimed. Week 1 was eight targets, the most on the team, with three catches. Week 2 was five, four caught, and that episode called the first and second place in targets the claim on the vacancy so far. Sunday was first again, 10, and five caught. Three games: 23 targets, 12 catches, a hundred 52 yards. The volume half of the claim has held all three weeks; the deep throws his way have not landed, and three games settle little about a share. Miami is at the Vikings on Sunday the fourth.
