Matthew Golden was back at practice Tuesday, and he did not ease in — Rob Demovsky reported, relayed through FantasyPros, that Golden returned from his toe injury and was spotted running with the Green Bay first-team offense. The honest limit on the week: none of the fetched coverage of Thursday's preseason opener in Pittsburgh mentions him, so whether he dressed or played in the game is unconfirmed.
The June preview's core argument was that the role was the bet, not the rookie tape. Golden's first season was a depth piece's line — 29 catches on 44 targets, 361 yards, zero touchdowns, roughly three targets a game — and we said there was no historical base rate that promises a leap from that starting point. The argument was the org chart instead: Green Bay let Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks go, drafted no receiver, and penciled Golden in as a starter alongside Christian Watson and Jayden Reed. The checkable claim was whether the first-team job held up once real football resumed.
This week's evidence is small but pointed. Coming off an injury absence, Golden went straight back in with the ones. A player whose entire case is the job keeps holding the job, through a toe injury and a coaching staff that had every excuse to bring him along slowly. The zero touchdowns on rookie volume, the part of the June read most likely to correct on its own, stays untested until games count him in.
Does the June read hold? CONFIRMED — the first-team role survived an injury absence, which is the specific thing the June case needed, even though the game reps and target volume that would turn the role into production haven't been observed yet.
Next week, Denver comes to Lambeau on Thursday night. Watch for Golden's first attributable preseason snaps with the starters and where he lines up when he gets them — the June read said first-team outside snaps were the tell that the job is what the org chart implies. We'll check next Sunday.
