Matthew Stafford completed passes against the Cardinals but the drop-backs lost value: 25 of 33, 222 yards, 2 touchdowns, no interceptions, 3 sacks, and -6.6 expected points added (EPA) on 37 dropbacks, -0.18 per dropback. EPA is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. His completion percentage over expected (CPOE), how often he completed passes against what their difficulty predicted, was +4.2.
He put the Rams ahead late. Down 15-9, the last drive started at his own 14 with 2:48 left; Puka Nacua caught passes of 43 and 16 yards on it. On second and 3 at the Arizona 6 with 52 seconds left, he threw short right to Colby Parkinson, ruled down at the 1 and reversed by replay to a touchdown: +2.3 EPA and +15.5 points of win probability. The extra point made it 16-15, and Arizona answered to win 18-16.
The damage came on the drive before. Down 15-9 at the Arizona 19, he was sacked for 11 yards and recovered his own fumble, -11.7 points; on the next snap Tyler Higbee caught a short pass and fumbled, forced by Cody Simon and recovered by Denzel Burke, -4.3 EPA and -11.7 points. Earlier, the two-point try after Blake Corum's touchdown failed on a sack.
Through Week 5 he had +27.5 EPA on 225 dropbacks, +0.12 per dropback, 6 interceptions and a +0.3 CPOE.
