White carried 7 times for 43 yards and four first downs, converting all three of his third-and-short carries, and caught all 6 of his targets for 40 yards; his 83 yards from scrimmage led Washington. His four-yard run on third and one put the ball at the Dallas one with 0:17 left in the half, and three incompletions followed, in a 37–20 loss to the Cowboys.

17 to 10, Cowboys, 17 seconds left in the second quarter, third and one at the Dallas five. Rachaad White went up the middle for four, to the one. +0.4 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — and 4.8 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it, the same figure as Terry McLaurin's 26-yard catch and behind only his 24-yard catch on third and 18. Washington then threw three incompletions from the one, Jayden Daniels was hurt on the last of them, and the half ended without points.
The line: seven carries, 43 yards, no touchdown, four first downs, five of the seven successful, +3.6 expected points on the carries, the only Washington running back above zero; six targets, six catches, 40 yards, one first down, +0.9 on the targets. The carries went eight, seven, 14, two, four, four, four. Six of them came before halftime for 39 yards, one after for four. Three were on third down — third and two, third and one, third and one — and all three converted. His first four carries came in a five-snap stretch of the second-quarter touchdown drive: eight, then seven on third and two after a McLaurin touchdown was reversed on review, then 14 with a seven-yard penalty for lowering the head added on, then two to the Dallas four, and Stefon Diggs scored on the next play.
The catches: two on third and five, 13 on third and 18 to the Dallas nine, nine, nothing on a third-and-16 throw from the receiver Dyami Brown, six, and 10 on third and four with 10 49 left, converted, on the fourth-quarter touchdown drive. Four of the six targets came on third down; he caught all four, and the last was the one that moved the chains. 32 of the 40 yards came after the catch.
Six targets tied him with Diggs and Brown for second on the team behind McLaurin's nine. The designed runs went 12 to Jacory Croskey-Merritt, seven to White and five to Kaytron Allen, but every third-down carry by a Washington back before the final drive was White's, and his 83 yards from scrimmage led the team.
Back in June the preview called White a lean, overpriced by a little — the 30-eighth back off the board at pick one 11, on a one-year, two-million-dollar deal as the veteran complement, with a year-five aging fade against him and 40 catches a year as the skill that survives it — and it said to watch who took the passing-down snaps. Week 1 was seven carries, all before halftime, and two catches for five yards, and that episode called it a thin game. Sunday was not thin: the back on third and short, and six catches. One pattern has held both weeks: 13 of his 14 carries have come before halftime. Two games do not overturn a price call, and this one leaned against it. Washington is home to the Seahawks on Sunday the 20-seventh.
