Saquon Barkley Camp Update — August 31: Kept in a Backfield Cut to Three

2026 NFL Season · Monday, Aug 31

Philadelphia's initial fifty-three-man roster keeps just three running backs — Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley — with Carson Steele, Dameon Pierce and Jordan Mims all off the roster. Barkley ends the summer without a single preseason snap, so the receiving-role question rolls to Week One against Washington.

Cut day turned Saquon Barkley's crowded backfield into a three-man room. The roster Philadelphia announced Sunday keeps Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley at running back, per Dave Zangaro at NBC Sports Philadelphia, and everyone else is gone: Carson Steele was waived despite 35 preseason touches, more than any Eagles skill player — the Philadelphia Inquirer's cut tracker framed it as proof preseason production doesn't guarantee survival — Dameon Pierce was released after a hamstring injury opened the door for Shipley to pass him, per Jimmy Kempski at PhillyVoice, and Jordan Mims was waived, per Jeff Kerr at Sports Illustrated. Pierce is back on the practice squad, per Kerr's Monday tracker.

Barkley himself closed the summer the way he spent it: not playing. No starters dressed in Friday's 30 to 13 loss to Cincinnati, per Olivia Reiner and Jeff McLane at the Philadelphia Inquirer, which finished the preseason without a win and without a single Barkley snap. That answers the first half of what we said we'd check — whether he would play before the cutdown — with a flat no. The second half, whether the passing-game role would show up anywhere that counts, got no answer either: nothing in the week's reporting charts him a target or a catch, so the screen-and-wheel work from the Foxborough joint practices remains the only receiving evidence, and it did not advance. Both questions now belong to Week One against Washington on September thirteenth.

For anyone just joining the thread: back in June we leaned against the popular story here — ordinary rushing efficiency behind the league's best line, a year-eight aging curve — and called the receiving role the clearest path back toward the ceiling. August produced one week of practice evidence for that path and nothing since, so the read holds, unproven in either direction, waiting on a real game. We'll pick it back up as Washington comes into view.
