Nothing to nothing, 13 35 left in the first quarter, first and 10 at the Philadelphia 28, the Eagles' first offensive snap of the afternoon. Saquon Barkley ran behind the left guard, Jeffery Simmons stopped him for no gain, and the play-by-play carries the rest: Barkley was injured during the play. −0.5 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the injury as a stinger, with Barkley in the medical tent for several minutes and listed as questionable to return. He did not touch the ball again before halftime. The play-by-play marks his return on the first snap of the third quarter, a one-yard run around right end that came back on a holding penalty.
The line: four carries, nine yards, no touchdown, no first downs, none of the four successful, −1.4 expected points on the carries; two targets, one catch, 11 yards, +0.7 on the targets. The carries went nothing, three, two and four. The three and the two opened a third-quarter drive from the Philadelphia 44 with the Eagles up 14 to 10, and the catch finished the job: third and five at the Philadelphia 49, eight 49 left in the third, no huddle, short right from Jalen Hurts, pushed out of bounds at the Tennessee 40 for 11. +1.9 expected points and 6.4 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. Two snaps later Hurts threw his way again on second and 10 and it fell incomplete, and after one more incompletion Jake Elliott ended the drive with a 58-yard field goal. The last carry was four yards up the middle on first and 10 from the Philadelphia 20 with 12 36 left in the fourth quarter, tied at 17. He did not touch the ball after that, including on the nine-play drive that won the game, which was eight throws and a scramble.
The split: Philadelphia called 30 designed runs. Tank Bigsby had 13, Will Shipley seven, Barkley four, Hurts three, Marquise Brown two and Makai Lemon one. 21 of the 30 came before halftime, and Barkley had one of them. After he came back it was nine designed runs — three for Barkley, three for Bigsby, one each for Hurts, Brown and Lemon — against 22 pass plays.
Back in June the preview leaned against Barkley at his price — the eighth running back off the board at pick 15, in his eighth season, coming off a fourteenth-place finish, with an aging pattern that points down and a receiving role that had shrunk to 37 catches — and it said to watch the receiving usage. Week 1 was 15 carries for 83 yards, 42 of them on one run, and one catch for −3 on two targets. Sunday was two targets again, and a carry count that says more about the first snap than about the player. A game interrupted on its first play does not test a lean about a season, in either direction. Philadelphia is at the Bears on Monday the 20-eighth.
