Tank Bigsby Camp Update — August 23: Hurt While the Room Makes Its Case

Tank Bigsby turned up on Philadelphia's injury report Monday with a toe injury, one of several picked up in the Baltimore preseason opener, per Jeff McLane at the Philadelphia Inquirer, and he did not practice that day, per Josh Alper at NBC Sports' Pro Football Talk. After that he simply disappears from the record we have: he goes unmentioned in Dave Zangaro's reports from the two joint practices in Foxborough and in Dave Spadaro's 10 observations from Saturday's game at the team's website, so we cannot tell you his status beyond Monday, only that nobody wrote about him.

The problem is what got written about everyone else. In the 24 to 21 loss at New England, Carson Steele carried 12 times for 33 yards, caught six passes for 84 and a touchdown, and hurdled two defenders, per Spadaro — Reuben Frank at NBC Sports Philadelphia counted him at a hundred 17 scrimmage yards — and Will Shipley added 56 receiving yards and a rushing score, per Spadaro. Those are exactly the August performances that reshuffle the back half of a running back room, delivered in a week Bigsby spent off the field. Dameon Pierce, meanwhile, remained out with a hamstring all week, per Zangaro, so the room's healthy bodies got even more of the audition.

Back in June we called this profile a pure role bet — real efficiency, 5.9 yards a carry for Philadelphia after last year's trade, but three catches all season and no job guaranteed behind Saquon Barkley. This week the bet's terms worsened on both sides: the player was hurt and invisible while two competitors put their best August film on tape.

The checkable things: whether Bigsby is back practicing before rosters cut to 53 on Sunday, August 30, and whether he gets any touches in the preseason finale to answer Steele's and Shipley's, because cut day is when role bets settle. We'll check after cut day.
