Seven to six, Panthers, against the Lions, eight 14 left in the second quarter, second and 10 at the Detroit 32. Two snaps earlier John Metchie had converted fourth and four. Bryce Young threw deep right to Tetairoa McMillan, 30 yards in the air, and McMillan scored. +3.8 expected points added — expected points added is what a play was worth given down, distance and field position — the most of any Carolina snap in the game, and 6.9 points of win probability, the chance of winning the game after the play against before it. The second touchdown came with the game tied at 16, nine 37 left in the third: second and nine at the Detroit 10, short middle to McMillan for 10 yards and the score that put Carolina ahead for good.
The line: 16 targets, 14 catches, a hundred 92 yards, two touchdowns, eight first downs, and +16.7 expected points on the targets. Only two throws his way fell incomplete. Three of the targets came on third down and all three were converted: 10 yards on third and nine on Carolina's first drive, 26 over the middle on third and nine from the Carolina 26 in the second quarter, and the one that closed the game, 18 yards deep right on third and 14 from the Carolina 32 with three 16 left and Carolina up six. 10 targets came before halftime, nine catches for a hundred 47 yards, and six after it.
16 of Young's 39 throws that named a receiver went to McMillan, 41 percent. Darren Waller was next with six, then Metchie with five. No other Panther caught for more than 37 yards.
Back in June the preview called McMillan a year-two bet, the question being whether his role rested on target volume or on touchdowns and efficiency. Last week the volume half slipped, five targets and 17 yards. This week answered both halves at once. Weeks 1 through 3 were 23 targets, 12 catches, a hundred 93 yards and no touchdowns; this game alone came within one yard of that total and added his first two scores of the season. Four games: 39 targets, 26 catches, 385 yards, two touchdowns. One big game after a quiet one settles little about the season, but the volume came back in full.
