Panthers 37, Bears 59 — Week 1: 361 Passing Yards, and a 22-Point Loss

Carolina scored 37 points at home on Sunday, threw for 361 yards, and lost by 22. Both halves of that sentence are real, and the second one is the story. Chicago ran for 291 yards and six rushing touchdowns, converted 10 of 14 third downs, and scored eight times in 14 possessions. The game was tied 31 to 31 with nine oh two left in the third quarter; from there the Bears outscored the Panthers 28 to six. Final, 59 to 37, at Bank of America Stadium.

Start with the run defense, because it is where the game was lost. 39 Chicago rushing plays produced 291 yards, six touchdowns, and +15 expected points added. Expected points added is what a snap was worth given the down, the distance and the field position; on defense a big negative number is the good direction, and +15 allowed on the ground is the worst figure any team posted in Sunday's early games. It got worse after halftime: 19 rushing plays in the second half for a hundred 66 yards and +11 expected points. The two that ended it were both from outside the 20. Kyle Monangai went 61 yards up the middle for a touchdown on the first play after Carolina turned it over on downs, 50 seconds left in the third, and D'Andre Swift went 28 behind the right guard with three 47 to play. And Caleb Williams ran for two touchdowns himself, a nine-yard scramble around left end on third and six in the first quarter and a 29-yard scramble around left end with 32 seconds left in the half, on a drive that had started at the Chicago 20 with the score tied at 24.

The pass defense was not much better. 31 Chicago pass plays gained 14 expected points, 269 yards and two touchdowns, and 19 of the 31 were successful — a 61 percent success rate allowed, the worst of the 16 teams in the early games. The throw that turned the first quarter was Williams deep right to Rome Odunze for 47 yards on second and eight, tied at seven, to the Carolina six. And the drive that ended the half had two of them: Kalif Raymond for 28 on third and 11 from the Chicago 19, Luther Burden for 24 on second and 10 from the 47, then the scramble. Chicago converted 10 of 14 third downs; Carolina stopped four. That is the worst third-down stop rate of the 16.

The passing offense was good, and that is the part that will be forgotten in a 59-point game. 40 pass plays, 361 yards, three touchdowns, one interception, +10 expected points — sixth of the 16 early-game teams by expected points per pass play. Bryce Young hit Jalen Coker deep left for 51 yards and a touchdown on second and five from the Carolina 49 with 12 49 left in the second quarter, down 21 to seven, and Jonathon Brooks deep right for 48 on second and 10 from the 26 with three 41 left in the half, which set up the field goal that tied it at 24. Young also scored on a seven-yard scramble on first and seven with eight 51 left in the half. The interception came on first and 10 from the Carolina 40, 11 seconds left in the half, down 31 to 24, deep left for Coker, Malik Muhammad at the Chicago 38. The run game was a hundred 25 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns, and 12 of the 22 were successful, the best rate of the 16. Carolina had 10 snaps inside the Chicago 20 and scored four touchdowns on them, the second-best rate of the early games.

The biggest swing of the game was a punt. Tied 21 to 21, seven oh seven left in the half, Tory Taylor's kick came down at the Carolina 22, Jimmy Horn muffed it, and Kaden Davis recovered for Chicago at the 28. 20 points of win probability on one bounce. The Bears kicked a 40-yard field goal off it and never trailed again. The other giveaway was the first play of the fourth quarter: Young deep middle to Tetairoa McMillan for 21, Jaylon Johnson knocked it loose, and Devin Bush recovered at the Chicago 39. 12 plays later it was 51 to 31.

One thing in the ledger that went Carolina's way and did not matter. On Chicago's opening possession, Bobby Okereke knocked the ball loose from Luther Burden after a seven-yard catch and Will Lee recovered at the Chicago 42, and six plays later Young hit Chuba Hubbard for a four-yard touchdown on third and four. The Panthers led seven to nothing. They did not lead again.

Now the part where a Week 1 episode has to be honest about what it is. The ranks in this episode are against the 16 teams that played in the early window on Sunday, not the whole league. What there is, is last year. In 2025 this offense finished 20-sixth in the league in expected points per play and 20-fifth on third down, and won eight games. On Sunday it was fifth of 16 in expected points per play and scored 37, which is the contradiction, and the honest read is one game against a defense that finished nineteenth a year ago. The defense finished 20-third in expected points allowed per play last season and 30-second — last — in third-down stops, at 52 percent. On Sunday it stopped four of 14, 29 percent. If you want one sentence out of this: the offense looks like something it has not been, the defense looks exactly like what it was, and one afternoon does not settle either.
